Cities 'Want High-Mileage Hybrid Taxis; Judge Says It's Ille

GreenCarReports.com -- By John Voelcker - If you've been to New York City lately, you may have noticed an increasing number of hybrid taxis on the roads: mostly Ford Escape Hybrid SUVs, but also Toyota Camry Hybrid and Nissan Altima Hybrid sedans, and a scattering of others too.

It's part of a long-term plan to green the fleet of 14,000 yellow cabs operating in the city, since they rack up far higher mileage than private cars--close to 100,000 miles a year when running two 12-hour shifts a day.

and as for complaining, hmmm.. I kinda agree kelsielee. Cabbies are there to drive you from place A to place B, no one said you had to truly be comfy while you were in transit. Although you'd think it would help increase the tip at the end of the day...

Such as joke that the taxi owners are concerned about passenger comfort (or being fair to passengers or anything that helps passengers). Complaining about less legroom in a hybrid is just an excuse to use to save them some money since I have never met a taxi driver that cares about his or her passengers' comfort at all.

Governments always forcing business & citizens to spend, spend, spend. Let the market be the decider & government step aside to make it easier for Americans to make more business & for workers to be hired in other than bloated goverment tax zapping jobs.

This cannot be done in 5-10 years, more like 20 if they're lucky.

Read the full article. Thanks to a deal brokered by the Obama White house, we all get to pay for cars which meet California's more stringent emissions requirements.

MidNJ, I am a Raleigh, NC, native and also served as a police officer there in the '60s. I think joel27nc is saying that the taxi he's talking about was a retired police cruiser. When I was an officer and gave you a ride it was free to the Wake County Jail.

That sounds right, legistrate something good while judges practising blind justice reverses that good

So I suppose just like UPS they are going to pass the savings on to the consumers? Yeah right haven't seen any reduced rates just like always prices go up but very seldom come down as much as they raised them.

That might be a good use for these cars if they are big enough. As a former taxi driver I can say that fuel costs were a huge worry. But they have to be bigger than the usual mid sized sedans.

Our only taxi in town is a police cruiser.

=========

Yes, there is a difference.

In your town the police cruiser is the taxi???

Where does your police taxi take you??

Personally, I would rather ride in a hybrid NYC Taxi,

LOL

Idea - How about a straight electric taxi with interchangeable batteries - like a fork lift? Keep the cab running almost 24 hours a day while the spare battery is charging. A fleet operator could have several charging/changing stations in the city. If Howard Hughes was still around he might finance such a fleet.

NGV's is the way to go. Taxi, bus, vocational sanitary
trucks, police & fire. We have the natural gas, we have
the technology, we now have the federal government
incentives. What's the problem?

I'd like to see what it will cost to upkeep these cabs.Batteries, motors, relays and switches all cost money. They will have to run them for 20yrs to pay for them.
